A small icon, the first sign in search results
In mobile search results, your icon appears before your site name. Without one, Google shows a generic globe and your result looks ownerless next to branded ones.

Common questions
A favicon is the small icon shown in the browser tab, in bookmarks and next to your address in Google results. It helps people find your site among open tabs and recognise your brand in search.
One size is not enough. Browser tabs use 16 and 32 pixels, Windows uses 48, the iPhone home screen 180, and Android and web apps 192 and 512. Google recommends a square icon larger than 48 pixels for search results. The generator creates all of these in one package.
Google needs a rel="icon" link in the page’s <head>, an icon file Googlebot can crawl, and a square image. Google does not support SVG favicons, which is why the package includes ICO and PNG files. Changes can take a few days to show in results.
Upload your PNG with the logo or image option; the favicon.ico button combines 16, 32 and 48 pixel sizes into one ICO file. The file is created in your browser and the image is not sent anywhere.
iPhone and iPad fill transparent areas of a home screen icon with black and round the corners themselves. So the Apple touch icon is created square and filled; a transparent logo gets a white background.
