Why Two Website Quotes Can Be So Far Apart

Two quotes carry the same title and very different numbers. The gap is almost always in the lines the quote does not show. Here is where to look.

You ask three teams for a quote for the same site and the numbers come back a long way apart. The reflex is to assume someone is overcharging. Usually something duller is happening: the three are not pricing the same work.

Same name, different work

A quote that says "corporate site" can mean a template filled with your logo, or a structure designed for your business and built to be found and measured. Both are honestly described by the same two words.

What two quotes with the same title actually containSAME TITLE, DIFFERENT WORKQUOTE ACorporate site7 unique screensDesign made for the brandContent productionMeasurement setupAddress redirectsSource code transferQUOTE BCorporate site3 screens, ready themeDesign made for the brandContent productionMeasurement setupAddress redirectsSource code transfer
Both quotes say "corporate site". Most of the price gap sits in the lines the quote never shows.

What actually sets the price

Screen count comes first, and it is not page count. Twenty service pages sharing one layout is one screen designed. Six genuinely different layouts is six. Asking for the number of unique screens turns a vague quote into a comparable one.

Then content. Text and photographs either come from you or are produced as part of the work, and the second costs money. A quote that is silent on content is quietly assuming you will supply it.

Then integrations, measurement and what happens after launch. Talking to an accounting system, connecting conversion tracking, redirecting old addresses and supporting the site for a period are all real work. They are also the lines most often missing from the cheaper number.

Where the cheap quote gets expensive

It gets expensive when your business does not fit the template and the template cannot be changed. It gets expensive when nobody set up measurement and a year later there is no data about what worked. It gets expensive on the day you want to work with someone else and the code was never yours.

The right question is not who is cheapest, but exactly what this number buys.

How to compare properly

Write the line items down the left of a page and the quotes across the top. Screens, design, content, integrations, measurement, redirects, ownership, support. Fill in what each quote actually says. The differences stop being mysterious within about ten minutes.

If a line is empty, ask about it before deciding. Most of the time the answer is not that it is free; it is that it was not counted. If you want help reading quotes you already have, we are happy to look at them with you.

TELL US THE SCOPE

FREQUENTLY ASKED

The questions that come up most often on this subject, answered briefly.

There is no single number, and anyone giving you one before seeing your scope is guessing. What is honest is the list of things that set the price: how many unique screens, who produces the content, which systems it has to talk to, and what happens after launch.

Not because cheap is always wrong. It is risky when the low number comes from measuring less: fewer screens, a template instead of a design, no content, no measurement, no transfer of the code. The bill for those arrives later, usually at a worse moment.

Put them side by side as line items rather than totals. Screens, design, content, integrations, measurement, redirects, ownership and support. When one quote has an empty line, that is not a saving; that is scope the other one priced.

THE FIRST STEP

Let's talk about your project.

Scope, timeline and budget are settled in the first conversation. A written proposal follows.

If the work is not a fit for us we say so on that first call, rather than sending a proposal anyway.
